Topic:
This month, Ian Darwin will be giving a talk on the linux-based OpenMoko cell phone. It is doing for the cell phone what Asterisk did for the PBX - disruptively changing the rules and the econonomics. Ian will talk about OpenMoko the project and OpenMoko the hardware and its two known implementations, the Neo1973 phone (which will be demonstrated if all goes well) and the HXD8 (which is not available yet but it's equally disruptive!). This version of the talk (previously presented at Ontario Linux Fest in October) will be aimed at both telephony users/integrators and at software developers.
Bio:
Ian Darwin has used UNIX for over 25 years, and is a big fan of UNIX and Java technologies; before Java, he did a lot of C programming. He write about and teaches these technologies and offers UNIX, Java, Security and web consulting; his manum opus is the Java Cookbook, a very useful resource for any Java developer. More recently (Summer 2007) O'Reilly released his Checking Java Programs with Open Source Tools. He is also known for Tomcat: The Definitive Guide.
He has been developing software since before there was a system called UNIX, let alone Macintosh or a Microsoft. He has been active almost that long in the free software community.
P.S. Show up at the talk and ask him if he has Asterisk running on his phone!
