Asterisk and Nortel 2004i Phones

Submitted by tnmti on July 7, 2009 - 8:16pm.

I have an asterisk server up an operational.

Server: Dell POweredge 1425 Dual Zeon 3.2Hgz, 4GB ram, one 250GB HDD and one 160GB HDD

Telcome cards:
TE410P - Quad T1 card only using the 1st T1 set of channels (0-23 I think)

Trunks:
T1 PRI circuit with 101 DIDs
SIP Trunk From FREE PBX carrier (1 Line)

Using PIAF distro of Asterisk

Phones:
I have 8 Grandstream GXP2000 (Ok phone, but will upgrade as I have money and time to something else, phone feels cheap in the hand..)

I have 4 Nortel 2004i phones from my old Nortel BCM50 Phone system I replaced that I would like to use. I like the 'feel' of the phone and they are reliable.. (Although with Nortel's announcement of selling off units not so sure this is the best choice.. but they have been reliable as VOIP phones on the Nortel system for 3 yrs now.)

Anyway, I need some help getting the the UniStim phones working... I am getting the 'is not registered' message.. and I am not a 'phones' guy and could use some help. I am an MS/Novell, Citrix guy paling in the phone world because I see it is going that way...

Please email me @ tlang@tnmti.com. I am willing to pay or trade services.. (I have a website hosting company and could host a free domain if that works..)

You'll need the unistim module for the Nortel phones - have you installed that already? Should be called something like: chan_unistim-1.0.0.5d.tar.bz2

I agree the old Nortel phones have a nice feel. The problem I found was that the unistim asterisk module only let one phone work at a time - since the phones went through a NAT router to get to the asterisk server. One phone worked great, but as soon as the second phone tried to make a call, the first line was dropped.

I assume the problem is with the asterisk unistim module, since the phones were able to go through the same NAT router to talk to the official Nortel PBX. If you don't have a router hopefully you'll have better luck.
